FAQ

What is the difference between an independent film and a film in another language?

An independent film is usually made by a single filmmaker who makes his or her own decisions about everything.

A foreign language film, on the other hand is usually produced by a larger production crew.

They often hire writers and actors from other nations.

You can also find professional translators to make the dialogue sound natural.

Why isn't there more crowdfunding sites such as Indiegogo and Kickstarter for filmmakers?

Crowdfunding websites are great because you can reach potential investors directly.

But most filmmakers don't think they're qualified to ask for money. They feel they need someone else who can vouch for them.

Since they haven’t proved themselves yet, they don’t think anyone should make an investment in them.

Instead, they spend many months working on the project in hopes that someone will notice.

They realized that they hadn't prepared properly when they launched their campaign.

Instead of receiving thousands of dollars, they receive a few donations.

Why is Hollywood calling this Hollywood?

D.W. Griffith was the one who founded California's first film industry. It was named after Los Angeles, at the time known as Hollywood.

The name stuck because it was such an exciting place for people to visit. People would travel all the way from other countries to see what was happening.

Hollywood is still a big part of our culture. We have movies, television shows, music videos, commercials, etc. These are all known as Hollywood.

Statistics

  • The author of the study noted that "The percentage of female speaking roles has not increased much since the 1940s when they hovered around 25 percent to 28 percent." (en.wikipedia.org)
  • The percentage of black female characters went from 16 percent in 2017 to 21 percent in 2018. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • If we translate this to a percentage, we get 28%, so let's be generous and say that ‘Hollywood studios' release about ⅓ of the movies released in the U.S. and Canada each year. (glitteratilobotomy.com)
  • In 2019, that percentage increased to 40 percent. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • By 1911, approximately 60 to 70 percent of films imported into Great Britain were American. (en.wikipedia.org)

How To

How to get an honor star on Hollywood Walk of Fame

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce in 1960 established the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The HWOF's Los Angeles location is at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard. It's made up of 2,711 stars, which are embedded in the sidewalk on Hollywood Boulevard. Each star represents someone who contributed to motion pictures, television, radio, theater, music, or some aspect of popular culture. There are 1,922 individuals currently listed on HWOF.

To become a member of the HWOF, you must submit your name to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which then submits your name to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once approved, you receive a certificate of eligibility, which includes your name, date of birth, city of residence, occupation, and category. A bronze plaque with the name of your choice is included. This plaque will be attached to a base of concrete in front the designated star.

A current HWOF member can nominate you for a star or if you have made significant contributions in movies, television or radio. A committee reviews all the nominations before deciding whether or not they are approved. If they do, they send a letter to the applicant's home address explaining their decision. If the person accepts the nomination, he/she receives a second letter confirming acceptance. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce then charges $25 and forwards the money on to the City of Los Angles Department of Cultural Affairs.

The department issues a check payable to the Hollywood Chamber of commerce, which sends the check to the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays the artist or organization whose application was accepted. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce pays half of the $12.50 fee to the artist or organization. The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs pays the remainder.

Once an artist has received their star, he/she is eligible to be listed in the HWOF. To be listed on the HWOF, you must pay the remaining balance owed to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. The amount due will depend on when you were first nominated. You would owe $15,000. If you were first Nominated in 1990, for example. If you were nominated for the first time in 1990, you would owe $15,000.

You can remove yourself from HWOF by contacting the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to pay the rest of your debt. They will remove your name from this list.

How old do you have to be in order to receive a star on HWOF?

Nominations are open to anyone over 18 years of age. To receive a Star, one must still be living at the time. A star can be renominated after 10 years.

What happens if I die before my star gets put up?

Family members may nominate you to be a star. If there are no living relatives, then the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will place a memorial marker in front of the star.

Why can't people choose to use a different street than having stars all over the place?

The HWOF isn't meant to be an historical monument. It's meant to be a tribute to those who have contributed to film history.

What happened to the stars that got stolen? The thieves stole around 1,200 stars. Each star weighs between 250 and 300 lbs. This makes it approximately 4 tons!
